What is Emotional Health? Find Out What it Has to Do with Your Emotional Eating and those Ravenous Food Cravings

What is emotional health and what does it have to do with losing weight? Learn how different emotions trigger your specific food cravings and emotional eating.

Are you wondering what is emotional health got to do with your food cravings and overeating the wrong foods? A lot. In fact, everything.

This might be a new idea to you, but, when it comes to mind and emotions, the invisible creates the visible.

What Is Emotional Health

Stop for a second and let that one sink in.

Are you one of those people who reach for chips, ice cream or a piece of cake when you feel frustrated, stressed or anxious? I know I was...

Despite cultural programming insisting that the extra pounds are due to laziness and eating too much, the true root cause is using food to fulfill your normal emotional needs like love, comfort, protection or relieve unwanted feelings like worry, frustration, stress, boredom.

Contrary to the popular belief that being emotionally healthy means feeling positive all the time, emotional health means recognizing and expressing your emotions appropriately.

When asking yourself, "what is emotional health?"... think about this. When you acknowledge your emotions - instead of stuffing them down with food - you are in control over your feelings. You are, in fact, balancing your mind, body and spirit, and that's at the core of your emotional healing.

In a moment you'll see how emotional health is a learnable skill and how achieving emotional health allows you not only to get out of the grip of emotional eating, but get the most out of life as well.

What is Emotional Health Link to Specific Food Cravings?

I have some news for you... Psychologists have asked for a long time, what is emotional health? How does it affect food cravings and eating habits?
Amazingly, they've discovered that specific food cravings are mere reflections of unmet emotional needs, as eating specific foods gives you a temporary relief to a corresponding feeling.

It sounds almost insane, doesn't it?

In fact, it appears that we merely "medicate" our...

  • stress, worry, loneliness, anxiety with soft sweets

  • frustration and restlessness with crispies like nuts and chips

  • boredom and dullness with spicy foods & fizzle drinks

  • resentment, guilt and anger with fatty, salty foods

  • mental/emotional energy drain with dense sweets like chocolate

  • low self-esteem, feeling rejected/unloved with gorging on food

But let’s face it... no food can heal poor emotional health. Food can’t dissolve negative feelings. Merely numbed, they lurk just beneath your consciousness resurfacing to sabotage your decision to take good care of your body, eat healthy, get enough sleep, work out and take time out of your busy schedule to de-stress.

You have to understand this. If you try to get rid of emotional eating without finding better ways to get what you're trying to get from food, you won't be able to lose weight and keep it off.

Think about it.

Over time, these unresolved negative feelings lead not only to weight gain; they take you on a path to depression, hopelessness and isolation, ultimately stopping you from enjoying life to the fullest.

But it doesn’t have to be like this - when you learn how to take care of your emotional health.

What is Emotional Health in the Context of Losing Weight and How to Improve it?

As you know, unlike other external solutions to emotional soothing (smoking, drinking, overworking, overanalyzing, overspending, people pleasing, rescuing others), overeating and giving in to unending food cravings translate into pounds over pounds of body fat.

What Is Emotional Health

But as you are about to discover, you can achieve a state of emotional health and wellbeing in the context of losing weight through mindfulness.

What is mindfulness, you ask?

Well, mindfulness is that out-of-time state of "being in the moment"... more and more elusive these days, especially when food cravings hit - seemingly out of nowhere!

Mindfulness is that sweet, non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts, feelings, body sensations and underlying motives behind your actions in the present moment. Mindfulness helps you to consciously make the right eating decisions rather than habitually choose the default mode of giving in to whatever food craving you may have at the moment.

Using mindfulness, food cravings gradually disappear and you finally get in control of your eating.

You may find it hard to believe, but it's true. Try it and see for yourself. You'll notice that when you are mindful, you start eating foods that nourish your body instead of "medicating" your unmet emotional needs.

In a nutshell, the answer to the question, "what is emotional health?" in the context of weight loss is this: instead of acting on reflex to satisfy your emotional needs or distract yourself from feeling unpleasant emotions with food, use mindfulness instead.
