Is Weight Loss Resistance the Reason You’re Unable to Lose Weight?

Are you unable to lose weight? Do you have insignificant results--under 5% of your weight? You should know that there are 5 main reasons you might have difficulties to lose weight:

  • Mental and emotional Stress
  • Bad eating habits
  • Sedentarism
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Subconscious limiting beliefs

On this page we'll deal with the first 2 causes: mental and emotional stress and bad eating habits. If you are experiencing high levels of stress on a regular basis, lack of sleep, diet often and skip meals, you are unable to lose weight at the rate you’d like to.

Find out here how they trigger your weight loss resistance and what to do about it! Let’s start with the first possible cause:

Unable to Lose Weight Due to Stress

Here's how stress contributes to your weight loss resistance. Cortisol, the fat-storing hormone, is triggered by lack of sleep, mental and emotional stress. This includes worrying, being resentful, afraid, depressed, and feeling guilty.

If you are like most people, under stress you probably tend to overeat. Especially sweets. True?

As you probably know, sweets generate blood sugar spikes. This creates feel good chemicals in your brain, so in reality, when you feel stressed, you are unconsciously self-medicating yourself. Besides, it’s a childhood habit: you were probably soothed with cookies, ice-cream or chocolate, weren’t you?

While eating sweets you might feel that your stress, anger or depression are eased. But at such times, your body’s fat-storing level is at its peak.

If you want to be able to eat without storing all the calories as fat you must lower and stabilize your cortisol levels first. So before you sit to eat, spend 20-30 minutes doing something that makes you feel good and above all--relaxed.

Unable to Lose Weight Meditation, self-massage, a quick workout, dancing, watching a funny video, caring for your pets or plants, tidying up your place, or a candle-lit bubble bath while listening to soothing music are all good examples of relaxing, cortisol-lowering activities.

It’s true, you can’t control most of the bad things out there that trigger your stress, anger, or depression. What you can control however, is how you react to them.

Changing your perspective, not taking things personally, and building up your personal boundaries help you tremendously to diffuse negative emotions at will. Reframe upsetting situations, stop judging others and learn to say "no" to deal effectively with the stress-induced weight loss resistance.

Unable to Lose Weight Due to Bad Eating Habits

Are you always dieting and skipping meals? Did you know that most diets are designed for quick results, but actually set you up for failure in the long run?

It’s true!

Most conventional diets are based on drastically reducing your caloric intake by almost a half (approximately 1,000 calories/day). But believe it or not, your body can't tell the difference between such a low-calorie diet and starvation.

Cutting more than 20-25% from your caloric intake (more than approx. 500 calories/day) triggers the so-called 'survival mode' or the starvation response.

What happens? Your body shuts down your metabolism to hold onto its fat storage at all costs. It increases the levels of fat-storing hormones and lowers the levels of fat-burning enzymes. Eventually, you get increasingly fatter on less food!

Agonizing, isn’t it?

That’s not all. Low calorie diets lower your blood sugar so much that you experience low energy, irritability, swinging moods, and depression. If you’ve ever tried one, you know that most low calorie diets wreck your health making you unable to lose weight.

And let’s talk about skipping meals.

If you are like most people, skipping meals is a habit. Waking up late, a meeting at lunch time, catching up with work in the evening, seem all good excuses for skipping meals, right?

But when you skip meals the starvation response is triggered: strong hunger pangs cause you all kinds of food cravings and ultimately, you end up binging on junk food.

So, if lack of time is an excuse to skip meals, remember that you can eat fast, nutritious mini-meals throughout the day and healthy snacks or weight loss shakes in between. Have something to eat every 3-4 hours to keep your metabolic rate at peak and your body's starvation response at bay.
